Learn How To Play Acoustic Guitar Chords


Almost everyone start to play acoustic guitar with strumming few chords of their favorite songs. Learn to play the acoustic guitar chords would be the very first step to take. You should remember, all your favorite songs are played by chords in some way. And some songs every have the same chord progression. Once you learned those acoustic guitar chords, you can manage to play different songs with them.


To learn acoustic guitar chords you need to know how to read the diagram and tabs. The diagram is reflecting the strings and finger board on the guitar. The strings are represented by the vertical lines and frets are represented by the horizontal lines. And the dots on the diagram show you how you should hold the chords, and the numbers show you which finger to use. Let’s look at the E-minor chord first. For E-minor chords you need to place your middle finger on the 2nd fret of 5th string and your ring finger on the 2nd fret of 4th string. One thing to remind you is when you place your fingers on the frets you should always place your fingers close to the next frets. Also you need to make sure when you hold the chords the string should sound clear. If it’s not clear, then you can try a little bit harder. Don’t press too hard, just enough to make the string sounds clear would be fine. Now, strum all strings, you will hear an E-minor chord.

Let’s try another acoustic guitar chord, C-major. To play C-major chord you need to place your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the 5th string, middle finger on the 2nd fret of 4th string and index finger on the 1st fret of 2nd string. OK, ready! Strum the chord, you probably will notice that the C-major chord has brighter sound than E-minor. Because it’s major chord, major chords sounds brighter than minor chords.

There are some more basic acoustic guitar chords you should learn like E-major, A-minor, A-major, G-major, D-major…etc.
